Life size Maltese crib after the Vatican and Bethlehem for the first time in Vienna
The life-size Maltese scene is based on a typical Maltese nativity scene. It shows the birth of Jesus. While some figures appear everywhere in cribs, some others, such as the 'Sleeper' (ir-rieqed) and the 'Climber' (ix-xabbatur), appear only in Maltese cribs. The dresses of these crib figures are the work of the Maltese artist Manwel Grech.
The design and construction of the stable were implemented by Jannings Falzon and Norman Hill under the supervision, assistance and coordination of members of staff from the Culture Directorate, Emanuel Vella, Architect Paul Buhagiar and Herbert Debattista.
An elaboration of this artistic crib was shown at St. Peter's Square in Rome in 2016. In 2017, this crib was on display at Krippenplatz in Bethlehem and in 2018 it was exhibited in Valletta, when it was the European Capital of Culture. To be able to defy the wintry weather, this year a modified version of this typical Maltese crib can be admired in Vienna.
